Proteomics is a fast developing field aimed at protein identification. Its development was made possible by improvement of separation and spectroscopic techniques, and development of bioinformatics necessary for data evaluation. This review summarizes some basic approaches, aims and methods (including MS, electrophoresis, chromatography, focusing field-flow fractionation, etc.). The review opens a special proteomics issue of the journal.
