Development of new drugs, originally oriented to their chemical basis, has recently shifted to a more biological sphere. The mechanism of drug activity on the molecular level and simultaneous technical background require a definition of a new drug type — biopharmaceuticals. Biopharmaceuticals have been predominantly prepared by recombinant DNA technologies as opposed to structurally precisely defined pharmaceuticals, predominantly designated as small molecules. This article describes a major paradigm of development of new drugs: therapeutic monoclonal antibodies and their nomenclature, therapeutic enzymes, therapeutic proteins, new types of synthetic recombinant vaccines and combinations of biopharmaceuticals with polymers including new drug technologies like nanotechnologies in drug reformulation form (polymer carrier).
