Optimum conditions are described for HPLC determination of 1-hydroxypyrene with electrochemical detection (ED) giving the detection limit cca 1.10-8 mol.l-1. This detection limit was compared with that for UV spectrophotometric detection ( cca 1.10-7 mol.l-1) and fluorimetric detection ( 5.10-10 mol.l-1). It was demonstrated that HPLC-ED can be used for the determination of 1-hydroxypyrene in urine down to 1.10-7 mol.l-1 and thus for biological monitoring of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
