Development of computer technologies and growing knowledge of computer techniques with students graduating from secondary schools lead to a necessity of continuous computer-oriented subjects, to co-operation between individual departments of universities and toseeking links with foreign universities having a similar orientation. The central point of the paper is a description of the knowledge of computer techniques with students entering the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague and a survey of computer-oriented subjects offered. A further part of the contribution is a short study concerning orientation and development of the course computing methods as well as description of equipment necessary for ensuring pedagogicaI and research activities based on the use of computers and computer networks.
