Preparation and Stability of Superheavy Elements

A brief review is presented of the recent achievements in the field of production and identification of superheavy elements up to Z = 118. Possible reaction paths leading to the synthesis of the nuclei in the vicinity of the island of relatively stable nuclei are discussed.
