The review deals with instrumentation used in fast gas chromatography. Practical effects of carrier gas choice and reduction of the inside column diameter on speed of analysis are discussed in detail. Conventional injection and detection systems are evaluated using the extracolumn band broadening. The data acquisition rate is another criterion for evaluation of detectors. Nonconventional injection systems that were specially developed for fast gas chromatography are summarized. New column heaters with high-speed temperature programming as well as advantages of electronic pressure control for sensitivity and speed of analysis are also presented.
